Still looking for this.
Hi, I looked for one of these locos last year as well. I could not find it anywhere, and wondered if it was even made?
Paul, It was made one of our club members has one .He runs it every year at the state museums annual Christmas train show. After seeing it I've tried to find one no luck yet.

It was made, reportedly in very low quantities. I too am on the hunt for this locomotive. And when I asked Joey at Nicholas Smith Trains about it last year, he mentioned they only received 3 of them.
That plus the fact it was produced in traditional red/green Christmas colors -- as opposed to the blue/burgundy/gold color scheme more commonly used on the Polar RR rolling stock -- made it extremely popular.
One sold on eBay for $540 (new) a couple of months ago -- which is somewhat meaningless 'cause it's only one data point. But expect to pay for this jewel if you can find one... especially now that it's Christmas season, which makes it even more desirable.

Oh, so it was made. I am not a fan of diesels but this thing looked really sharp in the catalog photo.
Hey folks, since the Polar RR SD80MAC seems so elusive these days, here's an idea you may want to seriously consider if you don't mind entertaining a small paint project!!! Or even better, enlist the services of an acknowledged locomotive painter!
Take a look at Lionel's new ES44AC in the Ferromex roadname...
The color scheme SCREAMS Christmas to me... green, red and white. Doesn't get any better than that. All we need to do is replace the Ferromex lettering and graphics with whatever fits our fancy... Polar Railroad, North Pole Central, etc... And all the lettering sits on solid backgrounds, as the paint-scheme isn't too complex in that regard.
I'm assuming the Crewtalk/Towercom dialog is typical Lionel generic lingo -- so no mention of roadnames or roadnumber, correct? For once, the dumb-down strategy Lionel has implemented lately for non-Vision Line Crewtalk/Towercom comes in handy. OTOH, if Lionel would allow us to record our own dialogs, we could keep the loco paint scheme exactly as-is, and have the locomotive play "Feliz Navidad". But that's not really an option here.
So..... Any talented locomotive painters out there want to step up to the plate and offer their services??? I'm serious!!! This is a BTO locomotive, so I'm not sure how many are out there. But right now availability has gotta be better than the current market supply of Polar Railroad SD80MAC's... which appears to be ZERO.
