It is possible to parallel transformers, AAMOF, Lionel actually shows a configuration of paralleled transformers in the TPU manuals. Note that these are fixed voltage transformers, so there's no issue of significant voltage differences. Also, they should be in phase as well.

Paralleling variable transformers is probably not a good idea.
