2026 shell on 1666 frame?

I bought a small collection recently.  It seems to have what would be a 1946 1405W set.  There is a 2465 tank, 2452 gondola, 2472 caboose, 1042 75 Watt transformer, and a 2466WX tender.  This set should have a 1666 2-6-2 engine.  What showed up is a 2026 numbered engine.  However, there is no smoke unit installed and no evidence of a smoke unit ever having been there.  The 2026 was not produced until 1948 and should have been made with smoke.

I'm thinking that perhaps the original 1666 shell was damaged somehow and a 2026 shell may have been put on the 1666 frame.  Does anyone know if this might fit as a straight swap?

The engine itself is a little scratched and chipped but otherwise really runs well with a proper functioning e-unit.  The tender required a little grease de-gunking around the front engine coupler section but also started whistling right away once powered and activated.  Just put a little oil on the commutator ends.

The collection also included a 1007 caboose that someone (maybe Madison hardware) switched to a frame with lights, a magnetic and coil coupler, and window frames.

Thanks for any help.
