Reply to "3rd Rail Update from China"

Though it's true that real world equipment dawns a lovely and shiny appearance, at least when fresh, I don't believe glossy finishes translate particularly well into scale modeling. Fine details tend to be overwhelmed and muddied as a result of high reflectance and related anomalies. An example may well be Scott's magnificent 'Train of Tomorrow' (a personal favorite) as almost crossing the line being too shiny. I do, however, find high gloss finishes to be very pleasing and a desirable attribute in tinplate. It lends itself to the toy-like qualities so regarded by enthusiasts and novice alike. Obviously, tinplate makes no attempt as a true representation of a prototype, whereas scale models, at whatever level of success, strive to achieve such goals entirely.
