Below is my O27 track plan, with two ovals connected and center inside oval is an oval and figure 8. This track plan was built in 1977 or 46 years ago. I used the center area of one loop of the figure 8 to hold a $10 homemade turntable and round house. It is a great track plan that allows two train operation and reversing.
I doubt there would be enough room for a turntable on a 4' X 8' layout but plenty room for a TT on a 8' X 8' layout. If room exists, I highly suggest building a homemade TT as this was the most fun building the layout and a TT offers the most operational fun and interest on the layout too.
On my 027 layout, the size is :
Main Board 11ft – 2 in X 5ft - 9in, Inside loop (out side rail to out side rail - Long 9’ 3” X 3’ 11” wide , Outside loop (out side rail to outside rail) - 10’, 6 5/8” long X 4’ 9” wide
View of my Main Board track plan on the Control panel with switches for all rail switches and track section cutoffs. The Red knob at bottom of control panel, in the second picture, turns the turntable by use of a clothes dryer belt. The whole layout is L shaped, has two control panels, three LW transformers, two loops with two train operation, outside loop Wye, and 31 remote Marx 1590 track switches.
Details on how the layout was built is on the OGR link below. Table of contents on page 1, post 1. How to build the Turntable is on page 1, post 9.
