Reply to "4x8 Layout Ideas"

Hello, I am very new to the world of model railroading so please be patient with me.  I am planning on building a layout for my two sons ages 6 & 4.  They love anything that is loud and diesel so trains are a natural fit.  I have space to fit either a 4x8 or 5x10.  I am desperate for ideas on what I should build.  I dont want to build something that basically they get tired of after only a few months however i certainly dont want to cash in on my 401k to build a layout that will start the divorce proceedings with the wife.  Ultimately I find myself ultimately wanting to get involved in this hobby as time goes on.

I guess my question is I really like the way this layout looks!  I have a Lionel LIRR M7 train set that was given to me as a gift.  I have since been collecting LIRR freight cars since.  I now have a WEAVER RS-3 engine and about 4 or 5 cars.  I would like to have all of these trains on the layout BUT its not necessary to have them all going at the same time.  I envision having a freight line and a passenger line.  I was wondering what the cost would be to build a layout like this. I would also be interested in transformers that may or may not need.  Any suggestions would be really helpful.
Thanks for listening to me and I hope to hear from you guys!  Thanks
