Yes . . . way back when.  

Throughout the 20th century, steam heat was standard.  A small number of passenger cars on mixed trains had coal stoves right up until the last day of mixed train service.  Amtrak started in 1971, with steam heat, but gradually eliminated it in favor of electric heat, starting in 1976.
