Dad started out as a Gandy Dancer but one day the Cook took sick and was never seen again. The Foreman asked my Dad (age 16) if he knew how to cook and Dad said Sure! The rest is history.
On the steps of his kitchen car. It had a small bedroom for the cook at one end as well as a pantry. The rest of the car was open with the coal-fired cookstove and a long table down the center of the car with benches on each side. All bolted down, of course and the cookstove had a railing around the edge to prevent pots&pans from sliding off.
