I've used WD 40 and also mineral spirits without problem. However, I've stopped using both. I now just let regular smoke fluid soak for a while before running. So far so good but I am not sure how dried up my wicks have been. Please note that mineral spirits and mineral oil are two different substances. I believe smoke fluid is as Roy noted mostly mineral oil.
