Advice on Replacing a Lionel Cab 1 Remote

I've got a Lionel Trainmaster Command Set (6-12969), consisting of the Cab 1 remote (6-12868) and Command Base (6-12911), but I would like to upgrade the remote to one that does not have the extending metal antenna. I broke and replaced it once, and now that the grandkids use the remote, I would prefer one without the antenna for safety reasons. I have no need or interest in the full featured model for Legacy engines, but it appears that I can get a Cab 1L remote without the antenna separately (6-37155). Would this require that I purchase the matching base (6-37156) as well, or will my current base unit be sufficient? Just want to be sure to give Santa the correct info. Thanks,
