american flyer prewar remote directional control

I have acquired a prewar American flyer no.549 Pullman set. It contains a directional control button with four wires leading from it. The instructions show the wires by numbers for hook- up but no reference to the wire colors. Could anyone kindly help me with the hook-up? I am also concerned that the rectifier is bad. Thank you for your advice.
