Sometime in the early 60s I rode the overnight sleeper from Edinburgh to London with my parents. My strongest memory is waking up at Kings Cross station with the room stinking of diesel fumes from the idling Deltic locomotive at the head end. (Twin Napier deltic naval gunboat engines - white hazy smoke everywhere)
