Several times on Amtrak: 2010 on Texas Eagle and Lake Shore Limited returning from visiting family in Dallas (first time Amtrak trip). Didn't sleep too good for being only 12 at the time. Then spent half of the night looking out the window since I know some of the Chicago Line and saw the New York Central Railroad museum in Elkhart (made a visit there several years later).
Latest time was in 2015 returning from Seattle on a NRHS Railcamp adventure on the Empire Builder. I sure slept for most of the day and night since I barely had cell phone service. Then spent some time listening on my scanner of the train crew.
