Anything to do in a smaller scale in a 40 x 40 space?

Hi all, my 0 gauge layout takes up the main space in my basement. However in an alcove behind the boiler room there is a space that would take a 40" x 40" board. Is there anything that can be done in that space in any smaller scale? If so what scale and any dieas?
