Are Lionchief Non-Universal Remotes Model Specific?

I just fixed a Christmas Thomas for a friend, but couldn't test it as I didn't have a Lionchief remote. This raised a hypothetical question: If, for example, I had a Polar Express remote knocking about, could I pair it to the Thomas engine? If so, how?
