Thank you for the picture links. I had no idea that they would pack so many tracks and engines around a turntable! (First picture)

Thanks, Roger. Let' see how this turns out. I just finished wiring the whisker tracks and the TT drive, and want to get the ground cover done this weekend.

That was my concern as it would require a lot of ballast. I believe that I will add something (cardboard, plywood, etc,) to bring the adjacent surfaces more even with the top of the ties, and save on ballast that way.
