I agree with you about the 50ft Gunderson Hi-Cubes. It could easily be a Master-Line class car with a little re-working. It's the underframe that really turned me off, the drop bottom flooring being not prototypical. Originally, back in the day, I bought a 6 pak of UP and CP each for about $200 a set and one BN car, thinking I'd build all new underframes and equip them with scale trucks. When I started counting up the cost and man-hour required, plus the projects already on my plate, I sold them. Kinda wish I hadn't now, given the cost of the single cars, but if MTH would jazz them up with new flooring, that would be the cat's meow, and I have a cat!
