This is true all over, with trade shows, conventions, etc. Given how cost conscious companies are increasingly, and given the return on investment for going to shows/trade shows, it just may not pay off when things are now done via virtual meetings/conventions (and I am not saying this is a good or bad thing).  Conventions also in the old days were a kind of perk for people attending, when the shows were held in places like Las Vegas or whatnot, and that like many perks of the past are either gone or disappearing.  I don't necessarily think this is a good thing, but it kind of is what it is.
