Probably because the power gets briefly interrupted and the Odyssey gets confused and gives you a burst of speed. Some versions of TMCC Odyssey have the "Odyssey Lurch" on power-up, that's probably what you're seeing.
For short engines like that with two closely spaced pickups, I use a one-wire tether to share the tender rollers, problem solved.
