Can you peek inside and see if there is old paint lurking? What if the (supposed) restorer used lead paint? There are DIY lead paint tests available for ten bucks. Weigh that cost vs the cost of the item, vs your enjoyment either way. If it will assuage your suspicions, and satisfy your obsession, go for it.
