Apparently MTH realized the issue with the grooved wheels. Ended up with a MTH B&O 0-4-0 prototype from the Cabin Fever MTH auctions and it came with traction tires on the back wheels. Must have been modification they made to test out.

It's still pretty loud when she runs.
