Battery Powered TIU? anyone done this?

I would like to be able to run my small portable layout "off the grid".

According to MTH the TIU can be powered by up to 24V DC...and it appears the PS2 & PS3 engines would be compatible.

So, I figure if I take (2) 12V gel cell batteries and hook 'em up in series, I can get that to work... wondering if anyone has done this, or a similar application of DCS on DC?

The alternative is to use a 12V AGM battery with a pure sine wave inverter to 120VAC then plug in a Lionel Powerbrick, as I usually do...seems like it would be easier but more inefficient! (going up to go down)

Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated!
