Grades are a lot of fun. Here is some early video of my double track, up and over, figure 8 layout. It's based on the Atlas HO Granite Gorge and Northern. Grades on this are 3-4%. Layout size is 8' X 14'.

I agree with ACE. Test out some grades with your equipment and go from there..
