Hey Tom looks great! You gave me an idea it'll be a little more work to pull it off though hopefully I can get it done this weekend.

Tom:

Your ceiling project for trains is an inspiration to other hobbyists, including me, who face a similar situation; i.e., nowhere to go but UP for expansion. My intent is to create a route that would accommodate my larger-size trains using Lionel FasTrak with O72 curves and switches.  Those trains cannot be run on the lower level because it has O42 curves and switches, the largest curvature that would fit on the platform in the room.

My problem .. installing a ceiling route in an L-shaped train room with a 15x19 feet L-shaped layout already in place below it is a logistical challenge -- how to install the wall-mounted ceiling shelf with tight aisles at the lower level below and also avoid damage to the layout while working on the "nose bleed" route above it.  I know ... I should have installed the ceiling route FIRST. I confess I wasn't thinking far enough ahead.

I prepared a track plan with ANYRAIL software. It's attached for reference. Meanwhile, that plan is "waiting" for a solution.  I welcome comments from FORUM-ites.

I know what you mean having to try to work over and around things. I had to work over and around all the furniture as it was way too heavy to move, but trying to work around an existing layout is way more difficult. I will say that having to work around existing stuff was another reason I used the ledger board and building the framework in smaller sections, that made working around things things much easier.

Not sure fastrak would be your best option for the ceiling it's really loud. I just found that out as over the past few days, since I pulled a couple of late nights and got got most of the track installed and wired up. Initially I wanted to use fastrak as some of the Atlas track sections coming from my old layout were soldered together and it was a pain to get it apart. Anyway I put some fastrak up there to test things out and it was crazy loud. That probably not going to be a big deal in your case as you're doing this over an existing layout as opposed to an office, but I thought I'd mention it.
