Buying tin-plate rolling stock

With humblest apologies, remembering that I am REALLY new to the tin-plate world, I would like to ask the following:

At this coming York I want to look for 2 or 3 tin-plate cars that are Christmas related since I bought the Christmas set, new, at the last York.  The cars are, I believe this is right, 2600-series cars.  They are rather small, 6" or 7" long.  Definitely way smaller than the 'O' gauge tin-plate Blue Comet passenger cars that I bought.

I know now that couplers can be different in height - my Christmas cars and Blue Comet cars prove that.

I might, might I said, consider buying an older tin-plate car if it's an eye-catching Christmas related car and mates with my current stuff.

As of now I am planning on taking a car so that I can make sure that what I buy mates with it.  Is there a way that I can POSITIVELY KNOW, without taking a car, that something sitting on a table will mate with it???

thanks for the education! - walt
