Reply to "CAB-2 vs CAB-1L/BASE-1L"

It's easier to see:

electronics

   Cab-1

Lionel 6-37155 CAB-1L Remote Controller

  Cab-1L

  Cab-2

All of these can provide conventional control, but they all need help to do so.

To provide variable voltage to the track for conventional control of either Lionel or MTH you need to add a PowerMaster of some sort, or a new transformer that has PowerMaster functionality built-in (a ZW-C or ZW-L).  PowerMasters translate the command from the cab and base to the variable voltage necessary at the track for conventional control.  There are several of them:

  • PM-1
  • TPC 300 and 400, of two series (one each from IC Controls and Lionel)
  • Legacy PowerMasters (180 and 360)
