Fortunately I am not in the "have to have mode" and never really been in that mode. I am not looking to pay a "buyers premium" but would appreciate a "sellers rebate", would like packing materials not to be "itemized just minimized" and would like shipping be at the "best and lowest cost".
Most of my train purchases have been at train shows and train meets, where Bargaining can be done, no competition for item if in my hand, eager sellers can be identified, gear can be hand held and examined, questions answered, no shipping charges or damage in shipping and often no local sales taxes paid.
I have a "like to have or wish list" and enjoy attending train meets to look to see what I can find. I have made less that 5 purchases on the internet bidding or buy it now sites in 35 years.
