How big is your layout? If not TOO BIG, cover it up with plastic sheet and then cover everything else. If you are handy, rent a paint sprayer and spray everything (joists, nails, ducts, wire) with black paint. Or hire a painter guy. Your ceiling will just seem to disappear.

They do this in Theaters, Stages and even some higher end restaurants.
