Steve, I was amazed when I looked up the fire on the map to see how close you are. 2 miles away is nothing with a fire like this. The evacuations are neighborhoods right next to you. It seems you have a river and the freeway between you and the fire, but that doesn't say it can't jump. It's a big fire for such a populated area, this is not out in the boonies somewhere. We're thinking of you and your family.
I went through a fire up in Yukon when I was taking the Alaska Highway one summer on my motorcycle, I was about the last they let through before they closed the road for a couple days. Fir trees were "candling off" on each side of the road, I just kept going. What reminded me was your mention of the water-dropping helicopters, one of them went over and dropped not far from me, I don't think he knew I was there. You do not want to be under one. Shall we say, they don't exactly spray a fine mist.
