Yes, Shapeoko's use Makita (or a clone) and Dewalt routers. Lots have done projects in Aluminum... amazing stuff!

Steel? Most say no, but I guess you could get a different spindle for it.

Best bet is to join the Shapeoko forum on Facebook... lots of great info there - very active.
