A side comment:

Don't feel guilty for fudging the tiny features to be bigger than scale. The goal in most modeling is not to make the miniature geometrically accurate. Rather, it is usually to make it look realistic. This actually requires exaggerating tiny features. It is just the way the eye/brain works. There is a good example from typography:  A 6 point font is not simply a 12 point font scaled down 50%. You actually have to redesign the shapes, exaggerating the smaller features. For example, serifs have to be relatively much larger in tiny fonts, otherwise they just get lost visually.

Similarly, IMO bricks in an O-scale wall look best when they are about 50% larger than scale.

So, you are doing exactly the right thing!
