I agree with your answer to your wife, You can do both!! You are right, when you are doing it for someone else, it encourages you to do it a little better, and to think about it more to write it down! I was horrified to get in front of the class, because my face would always turn red and kids would laugh at me. 
It is far easier to type out replies and send photographs to show what I have done, and attempting to do, and asking for help when I know I don't know what I'm doing!
