DCS PS2 Battery Arrangement

My original post on this topic was incorrect, so I apologize to Gunnerjohn. This is my real dilemma. Some of my locomotives with PS2 have a 2.4V 700mah NiCD battery consisting of two AA size cells glued together with wire leads and a connector. I am replacing the NiCD batteries with two EBL 1.2 Nimh 2800mah rechargeable batteries. The problem is I am not certain which wire lead is (-) and which is (+). I am guessing that the black wire is (-), so the red wire is (+). Is this a correct guess? Is there a way I can test / check the original battery to make sure I get the replacement right?
