I had pretty much detrnmeined that it was a capacitance issue. Anything longer than about 12" hanging off the serial port causes the problem to occur.

I took the easy way out and simply shared the serial port with a Y splitter. It's still necessary to disconnect the WIU when upgrading the TIU since when the WIU is connected to the serial port ti disrupts the data stream during the TIU's software upgrade.
