I have 3 tiu's on my layout do i need a wi-fi unit for each tiu.

Can i run these with my laptop.

If I go the tablet route which is the best reasonably priced and then do I have to get a contract for it

No contract is required. You do not need Internet or cellular access. All you need is WiFi.
