Do you really need a battery in the MTH Ps2 engines when running in Command Mode?

Hi,

Been a while since on the forum and have just resigned up.

Since moving to another state 3 years ago all of my engines and trains have been packed up until I finish the basement and can build my layout. Before packing all engines up they were already added to the MTH Remote and running well on a previous layout. Since they are packed and might be like that for a while i removed all batteries and labeled them for each engine. Some had the Blue battery, Green Battery and the White 9V.

From what I can remember when adding your engine to the remote the battery is needed so the ID can be saved. Since they have already been added when it comes time to use them again can they run in Command (DCS) mode without the battery and is the battery even needed at that point? And will any damage occur if run without the battery in DCS mode? Asking because I know Lionel only needs a battery in Conventional mode to keep the sounds going for shutdown and direction change.

Or would a BCR or new battery be needed when i want to start running them again in DCS mode?

Thank you in advance.
