Dullcote is routinely used on wood as a sealer. You glue on bracing to the back of the walls then paint both sides with a base coat enamel like Rustoleunm gray primer then spray dullcote to seal. This stops the wood from warping if you decide to go to acrylics. After that you can use acrylic paints, powders etc then spray again.
