Primer/sealers for general painting  can be used to create a paint surface that doesn't absorb a lot of (expensive model) paint. Wood/drywall tend to suck-up a lot of paint.  I've used a Sherwin William PrepRite, ProBlock in spray cans for large wood prep.  It is also sandable.
