Dummy headlight switch wiring

Alright I am out of my knowledge base here and need some help. I am installing a dummy lighting kit 50-1027. I decided I wanted to put a switch in so the Headlights could be on or off with the number boards constantly lit. I put a simple switch in the existing hole that was already in the chassis frame. I just spliced it in on one side of the lights as just a on and off switch. After I did this, it seemed to have by passed the constant lighting board, and let the full track voltage go straight to the bulbs. I figured some how it must be grounding as I put the screws in to mount the switch. What am I doing wrong and what can I do to correct it.
