It would seem that the motor is bad. Unusual but not improbable. These are simple DC motors. I have about 8 4-4-2 Atlantic’s from the mid 1980’s era, in various levels of completeness (they are parts engines) but none of them have a bad motor. The smoke unit is usually the damaged part. I’d be curious what failed on the motor.
