Early TMCC with plastic axle gears

I have the GE Dash-9 demonstrator (6-18226) with a bad gear on the rear truck. I'm hesitant to buy early TMCC models with the pullmore motors due to this. How widespread is the use of the nylon gears which are problematic?

Also, as a side topic, who could fix this issue with the proper metal gear?
