Update: One of my transformers has a capacitor added and it runs clean. I was not able to clean up the other transformers. The Lionel engines still are not clean running. I purchased an MTH Protosound 3 steamer, and it runs almost clean. I can run the engine if I stand about two feet away. My next purchase is going to be the remote control unit that GEYSERGAZER mentioned. Thanks for all the input.
