Engine modules

I just received my first Lionel diesels that I have puchased in years...the BN E8 AA units. 95% of my purchases have been DC 2-rail items for almost 20 years for. Let me start by saying they are much more breathtaking in real life than in their photos. The problem I am asking about is a hand written letter from Charles Ro describing the lack of “engine modules” with my purchase, with several options for “programming” the engines. As I completely missed the TMCC era and we are now in the “legacy” era, is there anyone who can explain in beginners language what these modules are purposed for? Cab-1 and cab-2? Remember...I am not an electrical engineer. Thanx much, Mike.
