ERR and Wireless Tether

I'm in the middle of upgrading a Lionel 6-11110 NYC 0-8-0 steam switcher with the DC Commander. That locomotive has a wireless tether that goes to the railsounds in the tender. Is there any way to reuse it or is it not worth the effort?

I salvaged the wires running to it but I wasn't sure if you need some circuitry between the sound output on the ERR boards and the railsounds board. I assume you can't just magically poof electrical signal into infrared signal and back but I also spent two hours troubleshooting no Legacy signal when I just had the antennae plugged into the wrong slot so I could be wrong
