You need to count wires you want connected. IF you want to link AC pickup between tender and engine that is 2, motor is 2, smoke Heat is 1, Headlight is 1, cab light if you want is 1, cherry switch is 1 (if needed, some tenders have axle sensors or you add the reed switch to the tender).
