Lew,

I like the Pan Pastel line of weathering chalks from Scenic Express. In addition to the "soot and grime" one below, they also make a "rust and earth" tones kit. I like that they brush on a little smoother than the chalk sticks. A little pricey, perhaps, but well worth it if you're going to be doing a few items, IMHO.
