I don't understand what a higher voltage bulb would do

I will explain what the voltage rating of a bulb means:

A 12 volt bulb will glow at 100% brightness at 12 volts.

A 12 volt bulb will glow more dimly at 6 volts.

A 24 volt bulb will glow dimly at 12 volts.

Got it?

If we can get the info from you that was initially mentioned, about whether or not you are using AC, then the diode in series is the most elegant and simple solution.

If the lamp is being driven by a constant-voltage supply, then the resistor is the simplest solution. Why do you not want to get involved with a diode or resistor?

It is hard for me to believe that anyone would actually recommend coating a lamp or wrapping a lamp with aluminum foil.
