FA-2 AA Units

Hi Friends:

Do the MTH AA units rely on each other to function? Take the LIRR set for example. Is it possible to unplug the dummy A unit and place it at the rear of the train behind the passenger cars? Or are their electronics in the dummy A that the powered A rely on?
