Fastrack RCS and postwar milk car platform

I just bought this to keep for a small 027 Christmas layout, but after removing the side strips, it still doesn't fit. It will fit easily with just one strip removed in the MTH platform which I have, but I would prefer the original. How can this be made to fit? Also, I see there are four 3-contact copper tabs (two per side) that would seem to be liable to "short-out" when in the platform. Any advice / explanations? Thanks.
