Faulty Lionel prewar E unit?

Hi All,

I've got a prewar Lionel 6 wheel motor with the 3 way E unit that cycles to the next phase every time I try to slow it down. It will run forward or backward at too high a speed to maneuver any turns, so when I let off the throttle, it kicks into neutral. I've used both W-D and contact cleaner on the points and drum, which seems to help slightly. Now this occurs when there is no strain on the motor. I have yet to mount it in a shell, so I can't say how it would react under a load. But I'm assuming it wouldn't help the situation, except keeping it on the tracks around the curves. Any suggestions for a remedy?
